What to watch for in Lions’ first preseason game

As the Detroit Lions gear up for the team's first preseason game, what should fans be looking for on the field?...

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]reseason means a lot to these young athletes. All summer long, they work hard to get this far. Now, it’s time for them to prove they belong here.

It’s like the old saying goes: “It’s time to separate the boys from the men.” Basically, who wants it more and who’s willing to go that extra mile to impress these coaches.

Well, I’m going to break it down for you.

Ameer Abdullah

This is what Joe Lombardi had to say about him:

“You know, the style that we are looking for is one that can gain yards on the ground and one that can catch the ball when we throw it to them and run with it. He can do both. He also is a guy that will stick his nose in there in terms of pass protection, but he has a lot of ability, which you can see. Quick guy, but we’re excited to get an opportunity to kind of see him against guys in this league other than the guys we practice against, so this should be fun coming up Thursday.”

He’s an all-round back for sure, but is he ready for the pros? Yes. I believe he will get the opportunity to show the Lions he could be a three down back but it won’t be easy with Bell ready to prove he’s ready to carry the load for the Detroit Lions like he did for most of last season. If he could stay healthy it could one great battle for number one.

Ryan Broyles

He has been fighting injury’s since his rookie season. He has shown us a glimpse of his ability a couple seasons ago before he went on the IR, but he has never played a full season healthy so this preseason he has to  prove to the coaches that he could stay healthy and be a play maker on the field. If not, he could be saying goodbye.

Eric Ebron

He has been getting a lot of hype this off season, saying that he could be an elite tight end for the Detroit Lions. But from last season what we all saw, was a rookie that couldn’t contribute like we all wanted him to. So, all eyes on Ebron and lets wait and see if he could contribute more this season and if he can, that just gives the Detroit Lions another target for Matthew Stafford.
These are my three players to keep a eye on during Thursday’s preseason game. I will have three new one’s every week until the regular season kicks off.
