Mackevision Medien Design, the German visual-effects (VFX) firm behind Game of Thrones, won an Emmy for its work on the show’s fourth season.

Game of Thrones has won this year’s Emmy Award in the category Outstanding Special and Visual Effects. With this award, Mackevision, specialized in CGI-Visualization and Post-Production, celebrates the first big success for its VFX Department, founded in 2013.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are the most significant television award in the US. The 66th annual Emmy Award ceremony was held on the 16th and 25th of August, 2014.

Jörn Grosshans, VFX Supervisor for the show, already received the honor for the previous season. He, VFX Producer Katharina Kessler, and a team of over 40 artists were responsible for a total of 72 VFX shots over the course of a season.

“We’re extremely happy about this award,” said Grosshans. “We have worked on very beautiful, highly complex and dramatic shots in this season. Receiving the Emmy Award is a great honor for everyone involved in creating the show’s VFX.”

Founded in 1994, Mackevision Medien Design GmbH is one of the global leaders in computer generated imagery (CGI) which covers 3D visualization, animation and visual effects. The company designs and produces image and film material, as well as interactive applications in high-end quality. It develops technological solutions for generating images and looks after the entire CGI process from data preparation to creative design — looking after major corporations, medium-sized companies and their agencies.

They have 300 people at work in their HQ in Stuttgart, as well as branches in Hamburg, Munich, London, LA, Shanghai, and even here in Detroit.

Under the overall supervision of VFX Supervisor Joe Bauer and VFX Producer Steve Kullback of US Television Company HBO, Mackevision worked alongside other world-class VFX facilities and shares this award with them.

The team was able to render whole surroundings entirely from computer-generation. The city of Braavos, which can be seen for the first time this season, was created as an elaborate full CG digital environment by Mackevision.

Over six months, Mackevision’s team focused on their specialized VFX tasks, creating crowd replications, full CG ships including the required water simulations, as well as set extensions and digital environments; all towards a single goal: to create the impressive canvas of Westeros, where all the scheming and fighting takes place.
