Thirty years ago when audiences first saw Star Wars in theaters, they were introduced to a brand new galaxy of heroes, villains, robots, spaceships and alien life.
While the movies themselves were enough to captivate audiences, when the credits rolled and the lights came on, the action stopped and the elements of the fantasy galaxy disappeared.
With Star Wars toys, however, the action never had to stop.
Like nothing ever before, Star Wars toys were a phenomenon that swept the nation, permanently transforming both the toy and movie industry. Star Wars toys created a hobby that still captivates its fans.
“Plastic Galaxy” is a documentary that explores the ever-fascinating world of Star Wars toys. Through interviews with former Kenner employees, experts and authors like Steve Sansweet and Gus Lopez, and toy collectors, it looks at the toys’ history and their influence on generation after generation of Star Wars fans.
The region-free DVD includes the 70-minute feature, as well as more than 40 minutes of extras:
• “Tiny Toys, Giant Disaster: The Star Wars Micro Line”
• “Know Your Toy Lightsaber!”
• “The Art and Science of Kenner Prototypes”
• “Steve Sansweet: The Secret Origin of a Record-Setting Collector”
With help from a successful Kickstarter campaign, “Plastic Galaxy” was released earlier this year on DVD, and is available on Amazon and select brick and mortar stores. Check out a 13-minute film teaser here: www.PlasticGalaxyMovie.com.
