Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh announced Tuesday that he had hired Jim McElwain as the program’s new wide receiver coach. McElwain is the 10th assistant coach for the Wolverines, bringing along 33 years of coaching experience.
In the official press release from the university, McElwain said, “I am excited to work with this offensive staff and coach Harbaugh.”
McElwain spent the past two years at the University of Florida as its head coach, winning SEC East titles in 2015 and 2016 and a bowl game win against Iowa in 2017. Prior to that he was also the head coach for two years at Colorado State from 2012-2014, taking the Rams from a 4-8 2012 season to winning eight games is 2013 and beating Washington State University in the New Mexico Bowl.
From 2007 to 2011, McElwain was an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Fresno State for one season and then spent three years with Alabama.
His resume includes a 2006 stint with the Oakland Raiders as the quarterback coach, following a three-year run with Michigan State. During his time with the Spartans, he helped set a school record with receptions and yards as the assistant head coach, also working with wide receivers and special teams.
McElwain’s time at Louisville included three bowl game bids coaching the wide receivers and special teams unit. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator, wide receiver and special teams coach with Montana State from 1995-1999.
After graduation from Eastern Washington University in 1984, he spent two years as a graduate assistant coach for the Eagles before taking over as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach form 1987-1994.
