Detroit Lions win first preseason game against New York Jets

The Pit's Adam Hammond breaks down what he saw and liked from the Detroit Lions after their preseason opener against the Jets....

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n the preseason game against the New York Jets, we were all curious about how the defensive line was going to react, if Ameer Abdullah was to play to his potential and if the offensive was going to give these quarterbacks enough time in the pocket to make play’s.

This is what Jim Caldwell had to say about last night game:

“It’s always good to kind of get the first one under your belt and I thought our guys did a number of things that were certainly encouraging. From a defensive standpoint, did a nice job in terms of keeping them out of the endzone. Anytime you have a preseason game it’s very difficult to hold a team to no touchdowns and they were able to do so. Did a nice job with a little bit of bend and don’t break sort of, couple series in there, but overall thought they tackled well and did a pretty good job. But yet obviously we still got a lot of work to do. Offensively, I thought we ran the ball decently. The offensive line did a nice job in there as well as the backs carrying the ball. Three quarterbacks all had scoring drives at one point or another, which I think was good, but we still got a lot of work to do. But things were at least encouraging.”

While watching the game, I saw some great plays from Ameer Abdullah. With his running style this is something that the Lions have been missing in their offense for a long time. If he plays like this for the rest of preseason then there won’t be any doubt he will be starting in their opener against San Diego.
“We’ve seen his quickness and obviously when we were looking at him, evaluating him coming out of college you see he could run, tough competitor all those things and it’s good to see him out there against another team and he was able to find some cracks and got off to a pretty good start,” Caldwell said about Abdullah.
The offensive line did a great job for the most part, making holes for the running backs and giving the quarterback enough time in the pocket. If the o-line could stay healthy, it will give this offense a big boost of confidence.
The Lion’s defense was outstanding for the most part even without some of their key players playing. They still have some big shoes to fill but they are on the right track.
It’s hard to tell from just one game where the Lions stand; we just have to be patient and see how they do next week.
