[dropcap]I[/dropcap]MAX Corporation and Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment Monday announced that Insurgent, the second installment of the futuristic action-adventure Divergent Series based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling novels, will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX format and released in IMAX 3D theatres domestically on March 20, 2015, and in international territories starting March 18.

Robert Schwentke (RED) directs from a screenplay by Mark Bomback, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Duffield.  Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), Theo James and Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (Titanic) reunite along newcomers Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts and Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.

The sequel continues the thrilling adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Having discovered she is Divergent, Tris Prior (Woodley) must search for allies and answers as a fugitive of the power-hungry Erudite elite. In a race against time, Tris and Four (James) now must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them.

“After the success of the first Divergent, along with the global hit phenomena of The Hunger Games and Twilight, Lionsgate and Summit continue to prove that they are at the forefront of adapting novels for the worldwide cinema,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “We believe that The Divergent Series: Insurgent will be an action-packed next chapter for IMAX audiences to experience around the world.”

Insurgent will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology.  The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them.

The extremely popular novel Divergent was written by first-time author Veronica Roth and has topped The New York Times Bestsellers list ever since being published in April 2011 by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins Publishers.  The book was written by Roth while she was earning her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University.  To date, book sales are over 30 million copies for the series.  The studio acquired the rights to the novel several months before Divergent was published.

Lionsgate, home to the successful Hunger Games, Twilight and Divergent franchises, is a premier next generation global content leader with a strong and diversified presence in motion picture production and distribution, television programming and syndication, home entertainment, digital distribution, new channel platforms and international distribution and sales.
