[dropcap]G[/dropcap]host in the Shell is an anime and manga that tells the tale of a post-cyberpunk world and the adventures of Public Security Section 9.

With advanced technology comes advanced crimes and this task force is set to de-escalate major problems before they become out of hand in the city. Each member of the task force has special skills to hand all the issues that corrupt officials, companies, and cyber-criminals throw at them.

On top of the political intrigue and counter-terrorism Ghost in the Shell has many fantastic stories to cover so when I heard they were making a live action movie based on this, I got excited.

And today big news struck anime fans as news from this live-action adaption was released. Rumors had initially floated around that The Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie would be playing the role of the titular character Motoko Kusanagi, aka Major.

However later in the year we heard that Margot was out and in October last year Scarlett Johansson was offered the role.

Now we know who the face of Major will be as Scarlett Johansson has officially taken the role. The movie will be directed by Rupert Sanders, who directed Snow White and the Huntsman.

Let’s see if he has what it takes to showcase the cyberpunk world of Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the Shell is a staple in anime history and is very beloved by many fans and I’m sure expectations are high. (They are definitely high for me)

Will they keep Major’s name? Will Scarlett have purple hair? What rating will this fall in to? How faithful will it stick to the manga and or the anime?

All these questions will be answered in due time. I really want to see some developer diaries go up for this to get some sneak peeks down the road.

Also, like with any future comic, video game, or anime/manga adapted movie, I hope they go the route that Marvel Studios has taken. Go all out!

Know that it’s okay to take risks to make sure the material stays as close to the original as possible. If not word for word or frame by frame, but in spirit.Marvel has proven over the course of time to make knock out blockbusters that please fans and newcomers alike.
