[dropcap]F[/dropcap]rom the Genesis to now, Mortal Kombat has always been a hardcore staple in fighting games. It has had it’s ups and downs, but overall has aged nicely over the years. I remember growing up and going into random stores and bowling alleys, just to see a Mortal Kombat arcade system. I’d put so many quarters into it just to have the computer opponent smear my body parts all over the screen, which made losing sometimes cool just to see what would happen to the character you picked.

In recent years, I feel Mortal Kombat has really kicked it up a notch, and Mortal Kombat X is definitely peaking my interest.

I’m very happy that they kept the x-ray move system in place from the self titled entry of 2011, because it’s fun to see how you’re destroying your opponents bones and vital organs. Mortal Kombat has normally always been about the brutality and the fatality. If you have never played a Mortal Kombat game, you should know that it’s a fight to the death. One or the other must die and they usually do so in the most grotesque and insane ways. If you know the right button combos, you can really do a number on your opponent. Some of them borderline the ridiculous, but that’s the whole point, going overboard.

This could be one of the biggest fighting games on the next generation. NetherRealm Studios has a chance to be the first and make their mark. Before Capcom and before Namco.

The only true next gen fighter that we have right now is Killer Instinct and while fun, get’s boring with it’s small 8 character roster and you have to pay for more characters later. Micro-transactions are a huge turn off for me and I hope that NetherRealm stays away from them. Mortal Kombat has always been very good about giving us a good sized roster of fighters and of course releasing some DLC characters after the fact which is fine.

Last time they gave us Freddy Krueger and Kratos as bonus DLC fighters, I’m very curious to see what bonus characters they have in store for us this time around.

They also took a key aspect from their game ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’ by implementing interactive environments. I can only assume as Sub-Zero breaks a branch of the wooded level, turns it into ice, and then slams it against Scorpions head. Destructible environments are also staying as well. Nothing beats beating your opponent through six or seven walls and into another playing field or having a tree fall down on them. I am officially hyped for this game.

I’m sure at E3 we’ll see more coverage and more gameplay. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet for ‘Mortal Kombat X,’ watch it below and find out who wins in the battle between Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
