Steve Aoki, Israeli electronic DJ Borgore and Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame teamed up to headline the Electronic Dance Music event of the fall concert season on Wednesday, November 6 at The Fillmore Detroit with the Aokify America tour.

Unless you religiously follow the EDM music scene, you have probably never heard of Steve Aoki. Reason being: The man’s showmanship doesn’t do justice without the flying cake, crowd surfing with river rafts, Champagne and giant transformer robots.

You would never get the full experience listening to it off your iTunes in your mom’s basement. Hell, Borgore even topped other DJs with ice cream cone shaped confetti machines and pole dancers.

American electro house producer Aoki started his set in a fancy LED lit vest. His DJ cage consisted of a podium flanked with two large pillars, all clad in LED lights. Does that sound pretty standard and boring? Those pillars were actually giant robot transformer.

They would get up in your face, step back, and spray the crowd with their fog guns. Later in his set, Aoki whipped out the cakes. He would jump off his podium, run backstage for a cake, and come out to the front. He would look and point. When he points at you directly, you know you’re about to be “caked.”

Late into the show, the rafts came out. They threw two rafts into the crowd and several people on stage got on, including one of the pole dancers from Borgore’s set. After that, several people in the crowd made their way onto the rafts.

Later into his set, Waka Flocka and Borgore performed their collaborations. Aoki finished the end of his set with his Class A edit of Kid Cudi’s Pursuit of Happiness.

Borgore performed his DJ set before Aoki with plenty of fanfare, confetti, and those pole dancers. All three elements made for a great DJ set.

The only beef was that between drops, the set got dry. The drops and confetti cannons compensated for this and made for a great time in the crowd.

Mid set, Waka Flocka joined Borgore for a massive rap-EDM duet. The two styles of music made for an interesting mix of dubstep bass and high snare and low bass of hip hop production.
