Mighty No. 9! The New Mega Man

So here we see the design of Mighty No. 9 and a lot of people are giving a lot of mixed reviews towards it. Obviousl,y it resembles Mega Man...

There comes a time when every artist makes it big. You get an amazing opportunity and you either join a big company or your own company goes big. Your ideas and creations reach a large audience and people love it. I’ve seen this happen to video game companies since I was a child. Growing up with the likes of Mario, Link, and Mega Man. Seeing companies like Nintendo, Capcom, and Activision grow; it’s wild the amazing feats they have accomplished.

One of my all time favorite games is Mega Man. I played my fare share of Mario, adventured with Link in Legend of Zelda, and played a few levels of Donkey Kong Country. But nothing really compared to the side scrolling action of Mega Man. It was challenging, intense, and overall a fun game. So when I heard that co-creator of Mega Man Keiji Inafune was leaving Capcom I was disheartened. What would this mean for Mega Man? Well Inafune left the rights to Mega Man with Capcom so they can still continue to butcher the franchise.

Keiji leaving turned out to be a good thing because now he can take things into his own hands. With the power of Kickstarter it seems that many of these game developers are starting out on their own, away from their corporate gods and crossing back into indie territory but with already the reputation and previous talent we know to love and respect them for.

So here we see the design of Mighty No. 9 and a lot of people are giving a lot of mixed reviews towards it. Obviousl,y it resembles Mega Man and obviously Keiji cannot use Mega Man anymore. Every argument I’ve seen debating the look of this new design is just null and void for me. The design appears to be more complex and yet more Saturday morning cartoon which I in fact love. I’m tired of all the complaints of newer games from our pasts needing to be more realistic. Keep the realism to the first person shooters just keep making me more classic games I know that I will love. The Legend of Zelda is key proof that looks mean nothing. It’s the solid gameplay that wins again and again.

There is not any actual gameplay footage yet of Might No. 9, but the concept art is enough to sell me. The team Inafune has gathered are all veteran artists and designers that worked on Mega Man to begin with. So you know right off the bat that the design and feel of the game is going to be solid. You will notice a lot of the character development even the baddies are very similar to Mega Man.

Upon writing this review initially the Kickstarter had just begun and there was only around $36,000 raised. It now currently stands at $2,102,414. Wow. I for one cannot wait to back this. They are only about $100,000 away from getting this not only released on PC, but if they make it to that $2,200,000 mark, we’ll see this on Xbox 360, PS3 and the Wii as well! So my money is down. If you’re a fan of Mega Man, side scrolling action games of old, then you should put money down on this as well. Backing the project is simple and depending on how much you ‘donate’ there are some nifty rewards for doing so. So don’t take my word for it, click the link below and check out their Kickstarter page for yourself!
