Sophomore forward Matt Ryan has been granted a release from the Notre Dame basketball program, allowing him to be contacted by other schools.

“We wish Matt nothing but the best in his career moving forward,” Head Coach Mike Brey said.

The move allows Ryan to finish his academic and basketball careers at another university, so long as it is not part of the ACC due to conference regulations.

Ryan was part of Notre Dame’s second Elite Eight run. During the 2016-17 campaign, Ryan appeared in 36 games but started in none, averaging just 3.6 points per game. While the sophomore did contribute in key moments for the Irish, he was never more than a solid bench performer for the team.

“He was a part of two great teams at Notre Dame and we fully support his decision to pursue his career in a different program, ” Brey said.
