Wolverines bully Gophers in rivalry matchup

The Little Brown Jug remains with Michigan after dominant 52-10 performance

The Little Brown Jug returns to Ann Arbor.

Michigan shutout Minnesota in the second half on its way to a rivalry victory, 52-10.

Quarterback JJ McCarthy scored three touchdowns in the outing, two with his feet and one with his arm. His first was a 5-yard run into the endzone with 5:50 remaining in the first half. In the third, McCarthy scored again on a 7-yard run. Five minutes later, he connected with tight end Colston Loveland for a 24-yard score.

McCarthy finished 14-of-20 with 219 yards with four attempts on the ground for 17 yards. 

Blake Corum led the ground game, rushing for 69 yards on nine attempts with a goal line punch in the second quarter. The touchdown pushed Corum up the all-time leaders board for Michigan (6-0).

Cornelius Johnson led receivers with three receptions for 86 yards. Roman Wilson also had three receptions for 56 yards.

The Michigan defense also had its way with Minnesota (3-3). Will Johnson picked off Gophers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis for a 36-yard defensive touchdown on Minnesota’s opening drive. Kaliakmanis was picked off again in the final two minutes of the third, when Keon Sabb tallied another defensive score for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines ultimately held Minnesota to 169 yards of total offense, including just 52 yards through the air. 

Leon Franklin scored in the fourth for Michigan on a 2-yard run, while James Turner notched a 31-yard field goal in the opening quarter.

Michigan recorded 432 yards of offense, with 241 through the air and 191 on the ground, averaging 7.7 yards per play compared to Minnesota’s 3.1. 

The second-ranked Wolverines return to the Big House on Saturday to host Indiana (2-3) at noon.
