Butler faces felony charges, others playing for Irish

Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler faces two felony charges for resisting arrest and battery of law enforcement, which may see him expelled from the school....

Wednesday, news came that Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler would in fact face felony charges following his arrest last weekend.

Butler faces felony counts of resisting law enforcement and battery against a public safety official. Sunday, Irish Head Coach Brian Kelly suspended Butler indefinitely from the football team after dismissing safety Max Redfield for a separate incident.

“He is not practicing. He is not in the building. He is not part of any football team related activities at all,” Kelly said.

Butler’s arrest came at the Linebacker Lounge just down the street from the university. Reports earlier in the week that no formal charges would be filed were clearly inaccurate given Butler’s current standing. The University of Notre Dame has the right to dismiss any student charged with a felony.

Butler may have spent his last days on campus in South Bend, but what about the other players arrested Friday night in the same incident that led to Redfield’s dismissal?

Apparently, running back Dexter Williams, linebacker Tevon Coney, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson and cornerback Ashton White are all practicing with the team and could be eligible to play in the season opener at Texas.

Coach Kelly said their eligibility could change if the university itself decides to hand down further discipline. Kelly expressed great disappointment in all six players involved in the weekend’s events.
