The college football season is starting for the 2013 year and fans and teams are amping up for what is sure to be one exciting season.

The SEC is still the favorite to win the BCS National Championship while legendary teams like Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC are all building up towards big comebacks.

Michigan State had a down year last season. The Spartans finished 7-6 for the year, going 3-5 in the Big Ten. Quarterback Andrew Maxwell had his first taste as a starting QB, throwing 234 of 446 attempts good for 2,606 yards. He threw 13 touchdown passes with nine interceptions.

The Spartans broke .500 after narrowly defeating TCU in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, 17-16. Maxwell threw 6 of 15 for 28 yards in that game,.

Le’veon Bell was the star of the team, running 1,793 yards on 382 attempts. He even had 167 receiving yards from 32 catches.

This season, Michigan State looks to do better than last. With a less difficult schedule with some challenges along the way, there is no reason MSU finishes less than 8-4 in the regular season.

The Spartans will NOT make the Big Ten championship nor will they make a BCS bowl game. But their moves will make them pesky obstacles for the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, Northwestern and Nebraska. Each of those four teams, ranked in the preseaon AP Poll’s Top 25, will deliver losses to the Spartans.

Ohio State not being on the schedule this year is a saving grace for the Spartans. Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes would squash MSU Head Coach Mark Dantonio on the field. Brady Hoke of Michigan just may do that for him.

Sparty opens the season tonight at 8 P.M. against Western Michigan. The game, broadcast on the Big Ten Network, should be an easy win for MSU. The Broncos are a solid team, but pose little match for the might of the Spartans.

The Spartans will finish 5-3 in the Big Ten, flipping their record from last year in the conference. While Michigan, Nebraska and Northwestern should hand them losses, only Michigan is guaranteed the victory this season. Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and Minnesota will fall to the Spartans.

Michigan State will finish fourth in the Legends Division and sixth overall in the Big Ten. While anything is possible this season, like any, the Big Ten is filled with tough challenges that could either help or hurt the Spartans. As their schedule looks now, they will fall to the four ranked teams while easily handing defeats to the others.
