This is it. End of the road, everyone. “Welcome to the Tombs” marked the final chapter of season three, and it was one heck of a ride. As it turns out, building an army composed mainly of pampered civilians isn’t as effective as one might think. The Governor’s mob charged the gates of the prison in a frenzy only to be completely routed at the first sign of combat, fleeing back to the trucks in panic. Then, apparently, the Gov decided to join a secret third basket-case faction and gun down his own army. Also, we say farewell to both Milton and Andrea. At the very least, Andrea’s death prompts some long awaited raw emotion on Michonne’s end.
Should Carl have shot that kid and is he becoming too cold? In my opinion, that kid in the woods had to go. Carl clearly told him to drop his weapon, but, instead, he tried passing his weapon to Carl. It seemed like he was trying to make a move to get closer and try for a disarm. Once he started edging closer, Carl would have been stupid not to shoot him. As for being cold, it’s pretty hard not to be in this sort of environment. Especially during the recent high stakes standoff between Rick’s group and the Gov. Carl became what he had to be. However, I think Rick needs to start working on bringing Carl back to the realm of empathy now that Woodbury is no longer an issue.
How many Woodbury invaders died at the prison? This is more of a question from me to you, the readers. I was just as confused as the invaders when the flashbangs went off and klaxons started wailing. It didn’t really seem like anyone bit the bullet there, but once they retreated it was stated that the prison was a “slaughter”. I wasn’t sure if they were exaggerating or they really did take a sizable hit there. It was hard to discern much of anything.
Why did the Governor go postal? He had all these grand designs, but lacked the tools to see them to completion. He’d been undercut at almost every turn and his closest allies reveal themselves to be traitors to his cause. Andrea tries to relay his attack plans to Rick, Milton torches the walker bomb and tries to murder him, Merle bites him in the ass and stages an ambush that kills most of his best soldiers. Michonne takes his eye and kills his daughter and he is unable to recapture her to exact his revenge. That’s a lot of pent up frustration. So when his army fails him completely during the assault, he lost it. The Governor saw red and mowed down everyone he deemed useless and disloyal. Now he’s supposedly cruising around somewhere with two of his cronies on the world’s most awkward road trip.
Has Rick finally regained his humanity? Seems that way. He rescued the sole survivor of the Woodbury army and allowed himself to trust Tyreese enough to risk his life and surrender. He even took in all the displaced children and elderly folk from Woodbury. It’s like he’s trying to save as many people as he can to make up for the people he ignored in the past. This is also the point where the visions of Lori finally disappear, indicating that Rick is strong enough now to continue on without her.
Andrea, what the hell are you doing?! That’s more of an exclamation than a question, but I’m pretty sure Andrea broke the world record for most time wasted while trying to not be eaten by the undead. First off, how long did it take her to pick up those pliers? It felt like a few days. I’m an awfully sedentary person and even I’m flexible enough to pick up a pair of pliers with my foot and get them into my hand in roughly fifteen seconds. Probably a little faster if a zombie is about to chew my face off. Secondly, no matter how many times you ask Milton if he’s dead, it’s not going to make him any less dead. Quit striking up conversation with a corpse and pick up the pace. Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, Andrea wasn’t fast enough and suffered a fatal bite.
That about does it, we’ll have to wait until next season for more zombie-related goodness. It might feel like forever, but if you’re a Doctor Who or Game of Thrones fan, those have just started up! I’ll most likely return to cranking out the occasional game review. As always, feel free to ask me any Walking Dead questions you may have.
