ZZ Ward brought her unique blend of blues and hip-hop to St. Andrews Hall in Detroit this weekend after not having played a headlining show here in 5 years. She recently released her ""second LP The Storm this summer.

Joining her on tour was Cat Clyde, a blues artist from Stratford, Ontario. Clyde performed an intimate opening set. Her smooth vocals transposed the crowd. Her set included songs off her debut LP Ivory Castanets, including “Mama Said”, “Like a Wave” and “The Meadow”.

Ward opened her set with “Grave” a song from The Storm. Her strong vocals rang throughout the venue and the crowd immediately started dancing. Her band was full of energy which was a perfect combination with her sassy love songs. She followed with songs from her debut LP Til the Casket Drops including the albums title song “Til the Casket Drops” and “Charlie Ain’t Home”.

She also performed her sensual song “Lil Darlin”. Throughout the set she changed her guitars out ""at least every two songs. She showcased her many talents with her harmonica solos during “If I Could Be Her”. She slowed it down for “If U Stayed”, a love balled from The Storm.

Ward took a moment to elaborate on the amount of time it’s been since she has come to Detroit, and how she loved the welcoming crowd she had. She also took a moment to praise the city and it’s revival.

After a powerful performance of “Blue Eyes Blind” Ward gave a two song encore. The encore featured “Help Me Mama” and a closing song of “365 Days”. ZZ Ward’s performance showcased her vocal talent, sounding almost identical to the record. Her band was full of energy, and never missed a beat.
