Michigan beats Western Michigan, 3-2, in home opener

The Michigan Wolverines conquered the Western Michigan Broncos with a 3-2 victory in their home opener at Ray Fisher Stadium on Tuesday. 

Sophomore Noah Miller led the Wolverines with a a pair of hits and two RBI’s, while sophomore Brayden Jefferis had two hits and recorded a run run 

Junior Colby Turner also recorded two hits, notching a double and a run scored from second base. 

After Western scored in the opening frame, Michigan (9-6) answered in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs to take an early 2-1 lead. Miller singled, allowing Jefferis to score as well as Turner from second base. Miller was caught out pushing for the double.

Not to be outdone, the Broncos scored again in the top of the second, making it a 2-2 deadlock.

In the sixth inning, redshirt sophomore Evan Haeger hit a sacrifice bunt which led to a Carson Luna score from third base to and Matthew Ossenfort advanced to second base, giving Michigan the lead and ultimately the victory.

The Broncos had numerous chances to score throughout the game as they left 13 runners stranded. 

Slade Moore (1-0) did 1.2 innings of work to earn his first career win, while Preston Barr pitched 1.2 innings to start the game and Grant Bradley took the mound for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Next, the Wolverines travel to Los Angeles, Calif., where they will face top-ranked UCLA in a weekend series to open Big Ten play.
