David Braun promised more changes to the Northwestern offensive staff, and reports Thursday reveal those changes.
After hiring veteran college and NFL coach Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator, the Wildcats head coach is seemingly brining in more names with ties to UCLA.
According to reports by Pete Thamel and ESPN, Northwestern is bringing in Jerry Neuheisel and Tim Drevno. Neuheisel will join former boss Kelly as quarterbacks coach while Drevno will oversee the offensive line.
Neuheisel, a former UCLA quarterback from 2012-15, first served under Kelly as an offensive assistant. He remained with UCLA when Kelly left for Ohio State, coaching tight ends under Deshaun Foster. Following Foster’s firing in September, Neuheisel moved up to interim offensive coordinator.
Drevno is currently an offensive consultant with Texas, who just beat Michigan in the Citrus Bowl on New Years Eve. Drevno worked for Kelly at both UCLA and Ohio State, with additional stints at Michigan, USC and the San Francisco 49ers.
During Tuesday’s press conference, Braun said more changes were coming though at the time couldn’t specify what those would be.
“What that exactly looks like right now, you know, to be determined,” he said. “But what I can tell you, it’s not just a one for one type of situation. Ultimately, I’m charged with having a vision for this program long term of sustainability and competitiveness in the Big Ten, and we have to evaluate everything.
“Some of it is going to involve a lot of the same people, but the structure and the support for our student-athletes in terms of how we navigate the development of our current roster, the scouting of potential incoming players in the recruitment — it is constantly evolving.”
