With Detroit being one of the final dates on the joint tour between Tyler, the Creator and Vince Staples, the evening was definitely one of the most highly anticipated rap concerts in the Detroit area thus far. With both acts finishing this past year off on a high note, the combination of both individuals made the evening more electric than predicted.

Vince Staples at The Masonic Temple in Detroit, MI.

Following his successful release of Big Fish Theory, opener Vince Staples began the evening with his smash hit “BagBak,” which got the crowd on its feet and  swaying to the pounding bass. Other songs performed off the album included “745” and the closing song “Yeah Right”.

Interwoven between musical performances, as well as blurred news and film clips, Staples’ set showcased a vulnerable and honest musician

However, the scenery for the set of the Flower Boy himself, Tyler, the Creator, was breathtaking. With nature scenery decorating the stage, the musician fully immersed the audience into an experience rather than a standard performance.

His set began with the slinky Frank Ocean-assisted track “Where the Flower Blooms,” Tyler emerged standing on top of a platform modelled after a tree branch. What came to follow proved to be a spectacle that perfectly hit all of the senses.

Within the past year, Tyler has been collecting hit-after-hit with songs such as “See You Again” with Kali Uchis and the party starting smash “Who Dat Boy” and has been raking up accolades – including a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.

Swaying through the tracks with ease, Tyler’s performance showed his range and strong abilities as a performer while giving his all to the crowd. Through some of the songs, he let the crowd sing and rap along, especially with previous hits like “Tamale” and “Smuckers.”

However, some of his standout moments include the Flower Boy highlight “911/Mr. Lonely,” which led the crowd to a wonderful sing-along moment. In addition, he shed light to including songs he had guest appearances on, as well as collaborative tracks on his own albums. Some of these include the JAY-Z and Frank Ocean song “Biking” and the Jaden Smith collaboration “Pothole.”

The vibrant energy in the room helped make the environment more interactive and Tyler conquered the crowd slump most artist struggle their whole career trying to obtain. While several artists only rely on hit singles, the entire audience clearly paid attention to his entire career rather than just being recent groupies. The show proved to be the definition of a sing along. The sold out show was another reminder that Tyler, the Creator’s career is still surging and we will most definitely see him again.
