No. 23 Florida State (4-2, 1-2) beats in-state rival No. 10 Miami (4-1, 1-1) for the seventh year in a row on Saturday night in a thrilling 20-19 victory. Senior DeMarcus Walker blocked Miami’s kicker Michael badgley’s game tying PAT attempt with just 1:30 left in the game to seal the ‘Noles victory.
Stacy Coley and Brad Kaaya connected on a beautiful throw and catch with 5:40 left in the second quarter to make it a 10-0 game. Badgley tacked on three more points with a 51 yard field goal, which would have been good from 60 yards extending the Canes lead to 13-0.
Ricky Aguayo was able to get the Seminoles on the board just before break. With 0:06 seconds remaining before in the first half, Aguayo converted from 31 yards out making it a 13-3 game.
Teams have jumped on Florida State early all year; Louisville did it for four quarters. Though in most games FSU plays like a completely different team, Saturday in Miami was no different.
Freshmen quarterback Deondre Francois found junior running back Dalvin Cook in the third quarter for the 59 yard touchdown cutting that Miami lead down to 13-10.
The ‘Noles would not stop there; this time Francois found wide receiver Kermit Whitfield giving the Seminoles the 17-13 lead. Aguayo would add another field goal from 32 yards out making it a 20-13 game.
Francois threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns, but took several hard shots while he was on the field. Francois or “Frenchy” as Florida State fans call him has proven over and over again how incredibly tough he is.
With just 1:38 remaining in the game, Miami had a chance to win it for third straight year. Kaaya found Coley yet again in the end zone to make it a 20-19 game. This put DaMarcus Walker in position to block what was the game tying field goal attempt.
Dalvin Cook who is from Miami finished the games with 209 all-purpose yards, 150 of those yards were picked up on the ground in 27 attempts.
