The biggest star of College GameDay was Hurricane Matthew.
Strong winds and sideways-blowing rain soaked Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday as the Fighting Irish fought both the hurricane and NC State Wolfpack in a losing effort.
Notre Dame (2-4) fell 10-3 in the lowest scoring game of the Brian Kelly-era, hurting their chances of a postseason berth already in the early part of the season. The weather conditions led to 10 total fumbles and just 311 yards of combined total offense.
Quarterback DeShone Kizer has been known for his play in extreme weather conditions, but Matthew was too much even for him as Kizer finished 9-for-26 with just 54 yards and an interception.
NC State (4-1) struck late in the first quarter when Kyle Bambard notched a 38-yard field goal to give the Wolfpack a 3-0 lead. The Irish wouldn’t find an answer until the first 4 minutes of the second half when Justin Yoon sank a 40-yard field goal of his own for a 3-3 score.
The Wolfpack stole the game early in the fourth quarter when the Notre Dame punt was blocked, allowing Dexter Wright to return the ball 16 yards for the 10-3 final.
Kizer led an unsuccessful drive at the end of the game bring the game to a 10-10 draw before regulation, but a botched snap with 1:52 remaining caused the Irish to fail on 4th-and-8. Kizer tossed the ball and found Mike McGlinchey by chance.
The game saw a 30-minute delay and voluntary evacuation take place after halftime, with the game resuming action at 2:30 P.M. EST.
Notre Dame returns home Saturday to take on No. 15 Stanford with bowl implications on the line for the Irish. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 P.M. EST.
