Professional athletes are often seen as the real world superheroes.
Through their skill on the field or court, hard work in the gym, dedication to their craft and the goodwill many spread through their communities, it’s not hard to see why professional athletes are seen this way. But what would happen if, for example, an NFL player one day did grow to have super powers along with his athletic skill set?
That is the story of The Protectors, a comic book written by former Chicago Bears star Israel Idonije. The Protectors looks at the average pro athlete and tells the story of them gaining and using superheroes to give back to the world and protect it.
The Protectors is published by Athlitacomics – founded by Idonije. The former Bear said he came up with the idea for the comic during training camp one year with Chicago, and that he wasn’t the only nerd in the locker room.
Idonije spoke with The Pit at last weekend’s C2E2 in Chicago about his inspirations for The Protectors, working with the veterans that brought his idea to life, being a nerd in the NFL and even some thoughts on Matt Forte leaving the Bears.
