[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n early scare didn’t halt the might of the Fighting Irish, as Notre Dame powered past Boston College Saturday afternoon, 76-49, behind the performances of Bonzie Colson and Steve Vasturia.
In the first three minutes, the Irish lost Demetrius Jackson for the day after he pulled his right hamstring, casting some doubt on his condition and sucking the air out of Purcell Pavilion. But in much the same was it was for the football team this year, the mentality was “next man up” and the Irish crushed the eagles.
Colson and Vasturia finished with 16 points each, while Zach Auguste tallied another double-double after scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Auguste picked up in the second half, scoring six-straight points off a pair of dunks and a jumper.
“It’s been fun, and I understand that’s my role and that’s my job,” Auguste said of his late-game performance. “I look forward to doing that. My brothers expect me to do that. So I just try to get assertive and be aggressive.”
The Irish outscored Boston College 16-4 to open the second half, and never looked back.
But things weren’t looking good after Jackson’s injury, not just for the game but for the season.
“I was questioning it and I was a little bit scared,” Auguste said ofJackson’s injury. “I was praying for him and hoping it was nothing too serious; and it’s not.”
After the game, Head Coach Mike Brey and officials said they expect Jackson to be back for Thursday’s game at Syracuse.
Both Auguste and Vasturia said that consistency and aggressiveness were keys to success for Notre Dame, especially after the injury.
“We know what it takes,” Auguste said. “We’ve been here last year and we understood what it took to win a championship.”
