[dropcap]F[/dropcap]inally, after many failed attempts at trying to see Nothing More live, I was able to do so in front of a sold out crowd at Flint, Michigan’s The Machine Shop.
This is the kind of band that brings such an amazing and unique stage presence to their live shows, that before you can even blink, they’ll be selling out the House of Blues’ and the Fillmore theatres. The crowd was actually so loud, I could barely hear front man, Jonny Hawkins, sing his own songs.
Coming out strong with a one of their heavier hits “Christ Copyright” I knew I was in for one hell of a show. Immediately, a small mosh pit opens up and the crowds voices electrified our ear drums. Without slowing down, the band plays into their next big hit with “Mr. MTV” and again, it was the crowd vs Jonny. This was a show that was full of dedicated Nothing More fans who knew lyric for lyric every song they played.
Carrying on with more hits from “I’ll Be OK” to “Sex and Lies” and another fan favorite “Friendly Fire” we come to a point in the show that just really blew my mind. When you hear “bass solo,” you typically think of the bassist giving it his or her all and just playing the greatest solo they could. This was not your typical solo from Nothing More. The only way I can describe it, is a sexy bass guitar on some sort of contraption that spins and rotates that every member of the band can play, aside from the drummer for obvious reasons.
Closing out the show, they end with the song that everybody knows and loves “This is the Time (Ballast)” and ending with “Salem (Burn the Witch)” If you have never seen this band live before, I highly suggest you do so before they enter the studio to begin recording their next album.
