Whitecaps split doubleheader with Lugnuts

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he West Michigan Whitecaps split Wednesday’s doubleheader with the Lansing Luguts, winning game two 6-2 at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Mike Gerber drove in three runs while Ross Kivett scored three times in the ‘Caps victory.

West Michigan scored the first six runs of the game. Kivett opened with a double down the right field line and rounded home after Gerber recorded a double of his own in the first inning. Will Kengor nailed the first of two RBI-singles directly after.

Gerber finished the game going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Kivett, Gerber and Kengor combined to go 8-for-11 in the second game of the doubleheader, driving in five of six Whitecap runs.

West Michigan starter Spencer Turnbull (2-1) pitched five innings, striking out six in the process. Lansing’s Chase De Jong (2-2) was roughed up, giving up six runs in five innings for his second loss of the year.

The Whitecaps move to 11-16, while the Lugnuts sit at 16-11.

GAME ONE

West Michigan fell 7-2 in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Jeff Thompson gave up four runs in three innings. Lansing starter Jesus Tinoco pitched four scoreless innings in his debut for the Lugnuts.

The Whitecaps will begin a three-game set against the Dayton Dragons Friday at 7:05 p.m. A.J. Ladwig will get the starting nod for the ‘Caps against Tyler Mahle of Dayton. Radio coverage with Dan Hasty begins at 6:50p.m. on the Whitecaps Baseball Network.
