[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen it comes to creating a list of the longest lasting alternative or punk rock bands from the last decade, there’s few bands who have been able to survive. It’s been over a decade since Yellowcard’s Ocean Avenue went platinum, but they still remain one of the most popular alternative groups.

On Tuesday, they released Lift a Sail, their ninth studio release. For many of their loyal fans, they’ll notice the sound is quite different than what they’ve released in the past, but it may very well be one of their best albums to date. From start to finish, the album is full of powerful instrumentals and well-written lyrics.

Their first single “One Bedroom” was inspired by the apartment in Denver that singer Ryan Key shared with his wife as she was recovering from a spinal injury. The song serves as a reminder of how much she means to him, a feeling that a lot of fans should be able to relate to.

Other songs that stood out were “Fragile and Dear” for it’s raw emotion and interesting use of electronic instrumentals. The title track “Lift a Sail” provides a catchy chorus which you’ll not only finding yourself singing along to, but inspiring in a lot of ways.

The album ends with “California” which is my favorite song by far. It’s a ballad that reminds me a lot of music from the time when Yellowcard first came on to the scene, and most teenagers at the time were trying to search for something more out of life.

Lift a Sail is a welcome change to most of the music on the radio today. The band members might not be the same they were a decade ago, but there’s no denying Yellowcard is here to stay.
