[dropcap]M[/dropcap]en’s basketball coach Greg Kampe has again comprised a schedule of stern tests for Oakland’s 2014-15 season, but his team will also get plenty of support from its home fans.
The team’s complete schedule was unveiled as the Horizon League released its conference slate on Tuesday, with the Golden Grizzlies set to play 15 games in the O’rena for the upcoming season, tying a record for the most since the school made the move to Division I.
“We have put together another tough Oakland schedule,” said Kampe via the official website. “It’s exciting to have a bunch of November home games for our fans.”
The team will open with exhibition games against Ferris State and St. Xavier at home, before starting the season with a trio of games in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, beginning with Iowa State on the road on Nov. 14. The other two games for the competition will follow with a duo of MAC opponents, first at Eastern Michigan, followed by Oakland’s home opener against Western Michigan on Nov. 19.
Six more non-conference contests will be hosted by Oakland, including a match up on Nov. 26 with Georgia State, led by familiar head coach Ron Hunter and widely expected to be one of the best mid-major schools in the nation for the upcoming season.
The early portion of the season will also see the team embark on a six-game road trip, including trips to Michigan State (Dec. 14), Arizona (Dec. 16), and Pittsburgh (Dec. 20), followed by Clemson and Maryland.
The Golden Grizzlies open the second season of Horizon League competition at home against Valparaiso on Jan. 2. The first of two meetings with in-state rival Detroit takes place Jan. 10 at Calihan Hall, followed by the home match up on Jan. 15. Oakland took wins from both games against the Titans in 2013-14, including a 83-82 overtime thriller at the O’rena.
