Crew[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Columbus Crew was beaten 4-2 by the Chicago Fire in a match that required 120 minutes of action to be eliminated from the 2014 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, a fate the Crew suffered last year as well.

A Patrick Ianni goal at the ’34 put Chicago up 1-0 after he scored off a free kick from Harry Shipp. Columbus answered after the half when Jairo Arrieta was subbed into the match and leveled the contest with a bicycle kick in the 55th minute. The Crew would take the lead 15 minutes later when Bernardo Anor scored.

That lead wouldn’t last though, as the Fire evened the tally in the 83rd minute with a goal from Juan Luis Anangono.

After 9 minutes and a deadlock of 2-2, the match went into extra-time. Chicago would find a pair of goals in the 92nd and 108th minutes to take the victory. The first of the pair came from Quincy Amarikwa, who scored after a series of crosses. Anangono added an insurance goal later to seal the fate for the Crew.

“It was a crazy game and I think we had the opportunity to close out the match,” Anor said after the match.

The Crew will resume Major League Soccer action Saturday when Columbus hosts FC Dallas at Crew Stadium.
