[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ehold, Thrice fans – there is great news.
If you’re a fan of Reddit, post-hardcore or if you follow Property of Zach or Alternative Press on Twitter and Facebook, you might already know the news.
But for those who don’t know, Dustin Kensrue, the frontman of Thrice, announced on a Mar. 20 Reddit AMA that the possibility of Thrice touring again is “very, very likely.” And if that wasn’t exciting enough, he went on to suggest that new music is also possible.
Here is the question posed by a fan and Kensrue’s response:
“Q: Dustin, I just wanted to say that Thrice is one of my favorite bands of all time and your music never gets old no matter how often I listen because each album is so unique. How likely is it that you’ll work on new music or tour again with Thrice? And which of your songs are your favorites/mean the most to you?
A: Tour of some kind: very very likely. Recording of some kind: I hope so and suspect yes.”
Later on in the thread a fan posted a similar question and he re-confirmed his previous answer:
Q: And do you still communicate with the other members of Thrice? Is there talk about a reunion at some point? (Say, maybe an anniversary tour for Vheissu?)
A: I do, but about as much as I did before, which isn’t a ton. We hang a ton on the road but have pretty separate lives at home in a lot of ways. Teps [Teppei Teranishi, lead guitarist] and I hung out more since we were in similar life stages with families etc. We will play some shows at least in the future. I don’t want to say more than would be wise.
Now before us Thrice fans get too excited, there was absolutely zero confirmation on any timelines. But this is huge news none-the-less, and anyone who has followed interviews with Thrice’s members during their farewell tour in 2012 noticed that many times they hinted at a post-hiatus tour (none so obvious as Dustin Kensrue’s farewell speech at Thrice’s final show in Santa Ana).
And exactly what does he mean by not wanting to say “more than would be wise?” Perhaps he means he doesn’t want to tease fans about something that won’t happen for several years, or perhaps there is already some communication going on with record companies and other bands.
There are several things to consider. For one, the lack of any date or timeline will keep this news the only news about this for a while. Kensrue also said in Reddit AMA mentioned several times about his own solo projects, including a follow up to his 2006 solo album “Please Come Home,” which he said will hopefully “early next year.” Furthermore, most of Thrice’s members are currently doing their own solo projects: drummer Riley Breckenridge is with a grindcore band “Puig Destroyer” (who sings “loud, fast songs about baseball”), and bassist and brother of Riley, Ed, is with “Felled Trees.”
Former AbsolutePunk staff writer Jack Appleby (he’s now with Siren Records) noted on an AbsolutePunk forum that he also thinks it will be a while before any of this comes to fruition. He worked with Ed Breckenridge with Felled Trees (a Siren Records artist) and apparently got that feeling from working with him.
Regardless of when exactly any of this will happen, Kensrue confirmed that Thrice will more than likely be back in a bus in the near future. Add on top of that his fairly positive response to fresh Thrice music, and the neo-post-hardcore/screamo revival could really get kicking in the next few years.
