[dropcap]D[/dropcap]etroit City FC announced Wednesday that it has hired Donovan Powell as the new general manager for the organization, making it the first full-time position in the organization’s history.

“One of our slogans here s ‘Passion for our city, passion for our game,'” Powell said in a press release from the organization. “One of my most important missions is to really deliver on that message. To have this whole soccer community rally around the city. I take that very seriously.”

Powell earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and business at Bowling Greent State University and went on to get his master’s in sports management from Drexel University.

His experiences since graduating college include working with USA Football, an official development partner of the NFL, as well as working with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. Instead of accepting a promotion with the organization, he searched for opportunities back in Detroit.

Powell will be responsible for hiring and overseeing a group of interns, increasing ticket sales, developing marketing and brand awareness, game day operations, sponsorships and working with media. In 2013, the home games for Detroit City averaged over 1,800 people.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to build on what the team ownership has started,” Powell said.
