Men’s Soccer:
8/30: Golden Grizzlies soccer opened the 2013 season at the City of Pittsburgh Invitational against host Pittsburgh. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after double overtime. Oakland outshot Pitt 24-17, with both goals coming in the second half for the Grizzlies. Sean Magee scored first for Oakland in the 67-minute, while teammate Joey Tinnion scored the tying goal during the 85-minute. Oakland’s record to begin the season following the game was 0-0-1.
9/1: Oakland was handed it’s first loss of the season by the hands of Duquesne (2-0-0) after a 1-0 decision. The match went into overtime, where Collin Phillips hit a header for the game winning goal in the 96-minute. Oakland’s next match will be Friday at home against Horizon League foe, Valparaiso.
Women’s Soccer:
8/30: After a big loss to #19 Michigan, Oakland continued a two-game skid that saw #7 Notre Dame shutout the Golden Grizzlies, 4-0. Notre Dame scored their first goal in the first two minutes of the match, but Oakland held them off for the remainder of the first half. The Fighting Irish tallied three goals in the second half. Notre Dame outshot Oakland 19-9 with an 11-4 shots on goal advantage.
9/1: The Golden Grizzlies fell to 1-3-0 on the season after a 4-1 loss to #20 Marquette Sunday. At the 1:57 mark, Junior Katrina Stencel scored her first collegiate goal in what would be Oakland’s only goal of the game. Oakland will next play Michigan State Thursday.
Volleyball:
8/30: Oakland toppled Central Michigan 3-1 to start the season with a victory. Cassie Pelloni earned14 kills.; Mary Grassano earned 13 digs. Set scores were 16-25, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-21.
8/31: Oakland lost in a double-header against Villanova, losing 3-1, and Oregon State, losing 3-0. Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 21-25 and 21-25 against Villanova. Taylor Humm had a double-double with 13 kills and 25 digs while Cassie Pelloni had 16 kills, a high for the team. Set scores against Oregon State were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-13.
