Sources are confirming that Detroit Tigers star pitcher Justin Verlander as signed a five-year extension to his contract, good to last through 2019.
The extension includes a vesting option in 2020 and is worth roughly $180 million.
According to a tweet from Darren Rovell, this new contract equates to Verlander earning roughly $756,000 per start or $6,900 per pitch. Verlander hinted earlier in the day on Twitter that today was going to be a good day and big news was coming, leaving many Detroit fans speculating before the news broke.
Verlander would have been a free agent if his contract were allowed to elapse by the end of 2015. The right-hander has a record of 124-65 since joining the team in 2005 and has led the Tigers in two consecutive postseason berths and two World Series appearances (2006 and 2012).
