Goth rock band MGT consists of guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite (former guitarist for The Mission & Peter Murphy) and vocalist Ashton Nyte (The Awakening). The band just released their new album Gemini Nyte in February with Cleopatra Records.
Thwaite has been releasing music under his initials for years, and has toured with artists like The Mission, Peter Murphy and Tricky. Nyte has released a variety of goth solo albums as well as the leading member of The Awakening, a project blending goth rock and metal.
Gemini Nyte is available now for purchase and streaming. You can watch the music video for the first single, “All the Broken Things” here.
We had a chance to chat with Thwaite and Nyte about the new album! Check out the interview below!
Kailey Howell: Each one of the band members comes from different backgrounds and previous bands they have been a part of. How did you all form together for the album? How did the different backgrounds come into play when writing the album?
Ashton Nyte: Well, the album was written by Mark and myself. Once we had initial versions of the songs recorded we reached out to Paul and Rich and others to bring their magic to the mix. I think we all come from pretty musically diverse backgrounds, which hopefully makes for an interesting album.
Mark Gemini Thwaite: When I was getting songs and singers together for my first MGT album ‘Volumes’, Adrian Skirrow from ASP in South Africa recommended I check out Ashton and consider him for a song on the album.. I was unaware of Ashton’s work so checked it out, loved his voice and Adrian put us in touch.. before we knew it, we had written several songs together, two of which made it on ‘Volumes’, and we continued to write and ‘Gemini Nyte’ was born.
KH: What inspired you to write Gemini Nyte following Volumes (2016)? What was different about the writing/producing process this time around?
Ashton: Mark and I first started working together on “Volumes” and essentially just kept writing. That album bore us “The Reaping” and “Jesamine” which became sort of blue prints for the “Gemini Nyte” album. I think we had half the new album written and recorded before “Volumes” was even released. It was a very fluid and organic process. The biggest difference between the 2 albums is that this is a 50/50 collaboration. It is the first time I have collaborated with anybody to this extent, as I tend to write and record everything (or most things) with The Awakening or my solo work. “Volumes” featured a range of contributing singers / co-songwriters, with “Gemini Nyte” MGT has now become a band with Mark and I creating and producing everything together.
KH: Is there a specific song that you resonate with on the album?
