August Burns Red released their new LP Phantom Anthem this past fall, and are currently on tour with support from Born of Osiris, Erra and Ocean Grove in celebration of the album.

We attended their date at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI. The room was packed, and there was a nonstop hype throughout the entire night.

Ocean Grove opened the evening. This was the Australian band’s first time in North America, and they were welcomed with enthusiasm from the crowd. Ocean Grove released their debut LP The Rhapsody Tapes in February of 2017. They opened their set with the first song on the album ‘What I Love About a Natural Woman’.

Erra is a progressive metal band that brought an intense energy to the stage, you would have thought they were the headliner. The band released their third LP Drift in 2016. The band performed tracks from that album including ‘Irreversible’ and ‘Drift’. They also included the song ‘Hybrid Earth’ off of their 2013 album Augment

Next up, metalcore band Born of Osiris erupted the crowd into a fury of mosh pits. The band’s intricate instrumentals carried the momentum of the crowd. Joe Buras on keys was constantly amping the crowd. The band opened with ‘Divergency’, a favorite off of their 2013 album Tomorrow We Die Alive. The set also included songs from their latest LP, The Eternal Reign such as ‘Abstract Art’ and ‘Empires Erased’.

Finally, August Burns Red took the stage with iconic drummer Matt Greiner taking his place at his kit. The band opened with ‘King of Sorrow’ off the new album Phantom Anthem. Vocalist Jake Luhrs was constantly swinging the mic as he screamed on stage. The set was solid, including many of the bands best songs such as ‘Empire’, ‘Provision’ and ‘The Frost’ and ‘White Washed’.

Luhrs joined the crowd at one point, creating a sense of intimacy just before splitting the pit for a wall of death. Greiner showed off his talent during an intense drum solo to kick off the encore that included ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Composure’.

August Burns Red continue the tour through February before the band heads to the UK in support of  Heaven Shall Burn.
