Lorde releases second LP, Melodrama

At just 20 years old, Australian sensation, Lorde, drops her second LP "Melodrama" and it surely highlights her vocal and writing abilities....

5 years after her debut album Pure Heroine, Lorde has successfully  released her second LP, Melodrama. The album carries over the same electro-pop sound from Pure Heroine, but shows a growth in Lorde’s talented vocals and lyrics. The debut single from the album, “Green Light” is a song for those who are experiencing change in their lives. The song juxtaposes the upbeat tones with intense lyrics such as “I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth”. It is the most “poppy” song on the album.

“Homemade Dynamite” is another anthem for those nights where you and your friends take on the world, oblivious to anything bad happening. The song has a catchy chorus that repeats the line “Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite”.

The album also contains many themes of heartbreak and loneliness. For example, “The Louvre” is about the early stages of a relationship where you’re caught up in the whirlwind of everything, engulfed in the relationship despite it being doomed to fail. The song has a dramatic repetitive line where she speaks “Broadcast the boom, boom, boom, boom, and make them all dance to it”.

“Liability” is a piano ballad that hits the heart hard. It’s about how she feels too much for lovers, and that they find her  “a liability” and “a little much”. Hitting hard at the idea of loneliness due to everybody leaving. The song is extremely emotional, and I believe one of the most successful songs off the album.

Overall, the album impressed me. It still blows me away that Lorde is only 20 years old and is this insanely talented. Her lyrics are intricate and paired well with her talented vocals that when put together with the electro-pop sound of her album, creates a unique, very enjoyable experience. Lorde will be on a massive arena tour in North America tacked onto her already extensive festival sets and other world wide dates, celebrating the release of Melodrama. Tickets are on sale Friday June 23.
