Supergirl had such a successful premiere on the CW last week, it would seem the inclusion of Superman did the trick. But only two episodes in we may already have to say goodbye to Cousin Kal for the time being.

Clark informed Kara at the top of the show he was returning to Metropolis. Having a life back there and with a rift between him and J’onn J’onnz, Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), that is no surprise. Unfortunately, Cadmus announced their presence and desire for world domination, so they sent their first foot soldier — Metallo and his kryptonite heart, plus one — to destroy the two Kryptonians.

It’s to the Batmobile (or the Fortress of Solitude in this case) for the duo and at the same time Kara makes a transition in her career as a journalist under the crusty and insufferable Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez).

Carr has been featured sporadically in the books of various DC super-teams (particularly the Justice League) since the 1960’s as both good and bad. On Supergirl he is portrayed as a Jonah Jameson-type foil for Kara, an archetype which has been done (everywhere), but the show’s panache of an old Spider-Man comic helps pull it off.

What could be ill-advised is pulling the plug on Superman’s role in the show so soon when he has proven to be so popular with Tyler Hoechlin in the role. Granted, the door is always open for him to come back (or at least until DC’s film division says no way) and the show needs to sink or swim on its own merits and the ability of its lead cast. That being said, a smart tactic for ratings could last a few more weeks.

It might get old after awhile but that point hasn’t been reached yet. If Supes can make the show stronger, why not keep him around as long as you can?
