If there was one band that broke from the norm at the Carnival of Madness, it was In This Moment. And that is not a bad thing by any means.

A tour that features to veteran rock heavyweights in Shinedown and Papa Roach as well as two Christian-influenced rock bands in Skillet and We As Human, In This Moment definitely were the red-headed step child.

But their performance added that sense of metal and madness to a Carnival so aptly named for being mad.

The set started with eerie intro music playing as two masked, bloody women crawled from behind the stage set and took their places at each side of the center stage set up. As the intro picked up and the band emerged, Maria Brink, the bands female front, took her position between the two bloodied women.

“Rise With Me” kicked off their short, six song set. Brink danced with her two slave women as the guitarists and bassists handbanged accordingly.

“Adrenalize,” “Blazin'” and “Whore” rounded out the first half of their short set. For the performance of “Whore,” Brink donned a bloodied schoolgirl outfit with a duncecap that read WHORE. She tossed the hat to a fan in the front row before finishing the song.

In This Moment performed “Burn” before ending the set with their hit “Blood,” which echoed through DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Brink, who for all intent and purpose could be described as metal’s version of Lady Gaga, rocked the place with her stellar vocal performance, both clean and screaming.

In This Moment didn’t just break the mold… They shattered it and left it lifeless, all in a very good and satisfying way.
