Korn’s Never Never Single Review

I'm not judging the album fully yet because it hasn't been released yet. Although the first single should at least give us an idea of how the album is...

In this day and age there are many bands that we grew up with listening to that keep coming out with newer albums. As these bands grow older, it is harder for them to bring forth the same emotions and feelings that their older music carried. Sometimes these bands get better with time, sometimes these bands continue the style and sound the same album to album (repetitively), or they sell out on some horrible mainstream sound that sounds nothing like (or completely against) how they sounded to start with.

So when I heard that Korn was releasing it’s new album and that Head had rejoined the lineup, I can say that I turned my instant rage meter down because I genuinely thought this was going to be great. Head was back, they’ve made amends, and blogs all over the net were boasting about how they’ve heard sneak peeks of the album from Jonathan Davis himself. And the general consensus was this: ‘Korn is back!’

Now I’ve got my hopes up.

Hearing interviews with Head describing his reunion with Korn was uplifting and seemed positive for the new album. Now keep in mind I’m very open minded with music. Even when The Path of Totality came out I didn’t mind it. It wasn’t a solid concept album, but it definitely accomplished enough of what it set out to do. Korn’s always been about experimenting with sound.

Now the big release was upon us. We were going to get our first taste of the album, “The Paradigm Shift.” I’m not judging the album fully yet because it hasn’t been released yet. Although the first single should at least give us an idea of how the album is going to sound. So here it goes. Let’s take a listen to Never Never.

From the beginning the intro has a slight electro vibe with the percussion and background noise. And of course entering the A bass drop. That small intro was a good one. From here it’s pretty much downhill. I can get the open verses. Lyric content… not that strong.

I don’t ever wanna have to try
Although I lie
It never flies
I don’t ever wanna have to die
But deep inside
The death it hides
And I never wanna clarify
And justify
So I run and hide
And I never wanna signify
So I pacify
All the hate inside

Okay so let’s pass this by. When are some epic guitar riffs or insane breakdowns going to happen? I’m waiting. Let’s get to the classic Korn ‘F-you’ moments. Let’s find that brutality. You know it’s got to be coming. Then the chorus hits and it sounds like something from pop radio:

(Lots of soft oh’s)
I’ll never love again
(Lots of soft oh’s)
I won’t ever have to pretend
(Lots of soft oh’s)
I’m never gonna love again
If I’m gonna have to try to pretend
Never Never Never

More of the same lame lyrics that I’m not even going to post the rest of them. Another chorus and I’m ready to hear the breakdown. Let’s see, does it happen?

A bunch of weak scatter. You know the insane monster like speak Jonathan Davis does on Freak on a Leash? But this was toned down and you could barely hear it from all the bass and dubstep influenced sounds.

Oh, more pop rock chorus and the song is over. The only feeling that starts to fill my body is disappointment. The only thing I could think of is how well this would fit beside Taylor Swift and the rest of the Top 40. If Never Never is any indication at all at how the rest of the album is going to be I will put it on a shelf next to Bullet For My Valentine’s Temper Temper. Let’s hope the rest of the album is nothing like this. Because right now I’m not feeling that ‘Korn is back!’
