Night AwayThe Night Away’s frontman, Andrew Guay, took a moment Thursday evening to answer some brief questions from The Pit.
Despite being a band from a small town in Michigan, they have seen some moderate success and look to continue building upon that success. Recently, the band released a video on YouTube of a Taylor Swift song (video below) that has earned them a bit of attention on the internet. In addition, the band has also had the opportunity to be featured on Detroit radio station 89X, where they competed in a battle of the bands and have been featured on other shows as well.
The band is hoping to release new music this summer for fans.
How long has The Night Away been around and who are some of the people involved with the band?
– The Night Away has been around since 2009. Through hard times and struggles, we lost two members in 2011 due to career choices so the band ended up taking a break for a year. We regrouped and came back with a new line up and new style adding Justin Neuner on drums and keys, and Erik Steele on lead guitar. The Night Away’s original members and foundation are brothers Andrew Guay (lead vocals and bass) and Brendon Guay (vocals and guitar).
So far, what are some of the highlights the band has been able to experience this early in your careers?
-As far as highlights go we have been featured on 89x, a Detroit radio station, a handful of times. We have also made it to the final round of Detroit 89x battle of the bands along with hosting a few 89x shows as well. Another accomplishment I say we have is being able to be a self-produced band. Being able to record ourselves is a BIG plus and frees us to be more creative in song writing.
How would you describe the music writing process, both lyrically and instrumentally?
-When it comes to writing my brother and I have this “brother connection” some people have called it. We have been writing together for over 11 years and have our own process down. One of us comes up with a basic idea and we structure out the main platform of the song together. From there we present it to the rest of the band for their input and ideas. So we start out with a solid foundation that can only build to something way better in the end with everyone being involved. The lyrics are written by me with the exception of Brendon writing his own singing parts.
Who are some of the musical influences the members of the band share, and do those influences come through in the music you write?
-Our influence ranges from Chiodos to Coheed and Cambria to Taking Back Sunday to Swimming With Dolphins and old Attack Attack. All these influences definitely come through in the music we write. From the heavy guitars to poppy vocals and dancy synths we like to achieve a good mix of all our favorite music.
What are some of the more important songs the band has written, whether it be importance through meaning or success?
– I would have to say our self produced Breathe and Be EP has been the most important yet. It was our first showcase of our new sound and rebirth of the band. This EP showed our new sound with electronic beats and synth while maintaining heavy guitars, double bass and catchy poppy singing.
What can you say about The Night Away fan base?
– We love anybody that gives us the time of day and listens to our stuff. I believe not many people even know we exist and that’s something we’re fixin’ to change!
The Night Away recently put a video out on YouTube with a cover of Taylor Swift’s “I knew you were trouble.” What was the reason behind making this cover and how well has it been received?
–  The Taylor Swift cover was completely Erik’s idea. We all were against doing a cover like that. To my surprise it turned out pretty well. Many people are talking about it, and in a good way so that’s a definite plus!
What are some future or current projects you are working on with the band?
– We are currently working on a Summer single to be released early June along with writing a new EP out sometime in the Fall.
How can fans reach you on social media or for booking?
– They can easily talk to us on Facebook, that’s the site we are mostly on currently. www.facebook.com/thenightaway
